Hi Dan,
Seems to be working better than ever. The RAM & storage improvements have made for snappier performance (or so Maggie tells me), and would have been welcome even if the old drive had been healthy.
Thanks for your expert help, BT

Dear Dan, just wanted to thank you again for coming by to help us with the computer and the printer. A... was able to start working on homework right away with the printer up and running! and yes my e-mail is working 100%. We look forward to hearing when you are able to put the new drive in. Thanks so much, Chris

Up Your Media, Vancouver Island's Mobile Apple Computer Support and Service

All internet professionals like to tell the tale of their first computer. While I studied on a Mac Classic II at recording school in '92-93, I didn't buy my own machine till 1994, a sweet Mac LC 475, with colour screen, 4 megs of Ram and an 80 meg harddrive. I built my first webpage that year for a Vancouver rock band and have been at it ever since."

Mac Tech FAQ

Are you certified by Apple
Yes, I am a Certified MacIntosh Technician, a certified Apple Support Professional and one of only 2 members of the Apple Consultant's Network on Vancouver Island. While working at one of Ottawa's Authorized Service Centers, I noticed a niche in the marketplace for repairs and upgrades to out of warranty Apple computers. I noticed the prices Apple was charging for their parts and service on those computers was simply outlandish, and resulted, more often than not, in the computer ending up on the scrap heap. I believe those computers still have a place on the information superhighway and it's my mission to keep them there.

Do you travel to (your town here)
I love Vancouver Island and it's no real hardship for me to travel anywhere from Victoria to Port Hardy to Tofino on a service call. The bulk of my clients live from Duncan to Comox to Port Alberni and back to Parksville where I live. My travel rates are as follows. Note, travel fee is waived for more than 3 billable hours.

  • Parksville / Qualicum / Nanoose Bay - no charge
  • Nanaimo, Lantzville - 40 km - 30 mins - $20.00
  • Courtnenay / Comox - 80 km - 1hr - $30.00
  • Campbell River - 120 km - 1.5 hr - $45.00
  • Port Alberni - 47 km - 1hr - $30.00
  • Duncan - 90 km - 1 hr - $30.00
  • Victoria - 154 km - 2 hrs - $75.00
  • Tofino - 166 km - 3.5 hrs - $150.00

Are You Insured?
The requirements of my membership in the Apple Consultants Network oblige me to carry a substantial amount of general liability insurance as well as an errors and omissions policy. I'm also required to submit to a criminal record and background check.

Do You Do Group Training Sessions
I've spoken at meetings of our local Mac Users Group and I'm comfortable speaking in front of groups. Many new users would benefit from small training sessions with 3 or 4 of their best Apple friends.

Web Design and SEO FAQ

Do I really need a website?
Yes. Every business, large or small, local or international, needs a website presence to reach and retain your customer base. Whether for product info, for service reservations, for your address and hours or full-blown e-commerce, a good website can give your business instant credibility and allow customers around the world to find you. And that's not going to change in the very near future.

I have a website. Now what?
The best looking website in the world has little value unless you can bring visitors to the site. Obviously your web address should be highlighted in all your regular advertising, business cards and stationary. To develop solid search engine rankings and other web-based traffic requires a dedicated consistent campaign which should include social networking tools, such as myspace, youtube, craigslist, as well as other more traditional methods of SEO

Can I get google #1 overnight?
Actually you can, if you want to pay the money. Google adwords offers a pay per click model of advertising. If you bid enough per click your ad could be #1 on the right hand side of the page for any particular keyword. Otherwise, search engine positioning is a long term proposal dependent on many factors. I believe it's worth it to keep a token ad budget with Adsense, just to ensure the domain is in the google database.

Can I get rich on ebay?
The person getting richest on ebay is ebay. Ebay charges many fees for store and auction listings with many upsells to stretch your ad budget, plus a final value fee if the item sells. However, ebay can be used as a great advertising tool to develop long term customers, and a very valuable series of links to your site, and is certainly worthwhile to the modern business.

What's the difference between hits and visitors?
This is a very important distinction to make. Many people boast about the number of hits their website gets. A better benchmark is visits, or page views. A hit is recorded for each file called by the server for any given page, be it an image, html file, javascript. This page, for example, will record 7 hits each time it's loaded. A visit is just that, as is a page view.
